MTI offers our clients a wide variety of services aimed at understanding and managing ash behavior in order to optimize system operation. These services are described below.
Fuel Analysis – MTI provides advanced analysis of fuel characteristics, specifically the measurement of ash-forming components in coal, biomass, and petroleum coke, for determining effects on combustion and gasification performance. This enables our clients to understand how certain fuels or fuel blends can impact system performance.
Metals Analysis – We provide analysis to identify fuel components that lead to erosion and corrosion of system components. This analysis is conducted through high-resolution imaging, elemental mapping, elemental line scans, and quantitative elemental analysis.
Slag and Refractory Characterization – The interaction of slag with refractory materials is determined using cup tests at temperatures up to 1700°C in reducing or oxidizing atmospheres. Fireside Deposit Analysis – This analysis involves characterization of water wall and convective pass deposits to determine the phases that are present, interactions of various deposited ash particles, degrees of melting, and other slag characteristics. By identifying components and conditions responsible for deposit formation, MTI can help clients make steps toward preventing future deposit formation and enhancing system performance. Ash Fusion and Flow Behavior – Standard ash fusion measurement testing under oxidizing or reducing atmospheres is determined on ash and deposit material. Advanced Analysis to Predict Ash Performance – We can also analyze data using software that provides advanced indices to predict the impacts of ash and slag on coal-fired utility boiler performance. Learn more about our Ash Performance Indices >>
Field Testing: We do on-site testing to determine the impacts of fuel properties and emissions-control technology on plant performance. We will also identify unintended consequences of technology applications. We specifically examine the application of technologies to meet new environmental standards, such as Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS). Learn more >>
