Materials Characterization

Microbeam uses various laboratory methods to characterize the physical and chemical properties of materials. We specialize in the characterization of metals, ceramics and mineral ores. These results help us identify and solve materials-specific problems in the field.

High Temperature Sintered Strength
Determine strength and temperature at which strength begins to develop in high-temperature silicate bonding materials

Low-Temperature Sintered Strength
Determine strength and temperature at which strength begins to develop in low-temperature sulfur bonding materials

Sticking Strength
Determine critical temperature for slag adhesion to a substrate

TGA
Determine the thermal stability of materials under various environments

DSC
Determine material thermal transitions

TCLP
Determine the potential leachability of dangerous toxic chemicals

Angle of Repose
Determine the critical angle at which a material can be piled without sliding

Particle Size Distribution
Determine the distribution of particle sizes within a specific powder material

pH
Determine the acidity or alkalinity of a solution

Free Swelling Index
Determine the increase in the volume of coal after heating without physical restrictions

Decrepitation
Determine the reduction in particle size after heating and cracking

Porosity/Density
Determine bulk density of materials. Porosity can be determined based on known densities

XRD
Determine the crystallinity and crystal structure of a material

Milling Index
Determine the grindability of a particular coal

Sieve Analysis
Determine the particle size fractions of a powder material
