Analytical Consulting

Microbeam was founded with the mission of providing service analyses for coal industry clients using specialized scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Today, MTI is a recognized leader in advanced fuel-quality analysis and serves its clients toward achieving enhanced system performance.

Since Microbeam was established in 1992, we have performed more than 1,650 commercial projects providing advanced analysis to domestic and international clients. We work with a variety of clients, including Energy Companies, Government, Research Institutions, Resource Developers, Technology Developers and Chemical Refineries.

At Microbeam Technologies, laboratory testing is the cornerstone of our services. Our field-testing expertise builds on this foundation. We are always looking for opportunities to shape a cleaner future.

Lab Testing Areas

To improve efficiencies and reduce emissions in the energy sector, Microbeam uses automated tailored Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with x-ray microanalysis and image processing to understand the chemical and physical processes that occur on a microscopic scale that impact macroscale performance.

  • Coal drying processing step of the materials preparation process.

    Materials Preparation

Small to large-scale crushing and grind of coal preliminary to laboratory testing. Gross samples from 5-gallon bucket to 55 gallon drums are reduced in both particle size and quantity to yield an industry standard ASTM laboratory sample.

  • Fuel Analysis

Industry-standard ASTM method fuel analysis combined with scanning electron microscopy to analyze current and/or potential fuels. With 30 years of business in fuel analysis we have a long history of fuel expertise.

  • Slag and Refractory Characterization

Utilize a variety of laboratory and SEM techniques to characterize slag and refractory materials to measure the penetration of slag that causes corrosion and the formation of protective layers.

  • Deposit and Slag Analysis

Advanced fuel, slag, ash deposit and fly ash analysis to understand the impacts of fuel impurities on power system performance.

  • Materials Characterization

Identify and solve materials-specific problems by using various laboratory methods to characterize the physical and chemical properties of materials.

  • Microbeam Technologies field testing.

    Field Testing

In-field deployment for hands-on services and technology demonstrations, collaborating with industry partners and clients as well as state and federal agencies.
